5 AI Documentaries to Watch

In a world where technology is ever-growing, there is so much to learn and understand. It can be overwhelming at times, but watching a documentary is a great way to start. Listed below are five documentaries that can help you get started on diving deeper into Artificial Intelligence and its impact.

1. Lo And Behold: Reveries Of The Connected World

Directed by Werner Herzog, Lo And Behold: Reveries of the Connected World is an award-winning American documentary film created in 2016. Herzog explores the development of technology, specifically the impact of the Internet, artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, and human life. Herzog begins at the “birthplace of the Internet,” the University of California in Los Angeles, and touches upon where the Internet journey first started. From reflecting on a cyberbullying incident to interviews with leaders of the tech world like Elon Musk, the film reveals the ins and outs of technology and what the future holds.

2. The Age of AI

The Age of AI is a recent YouTube Originals series that started in December of 2019 and is hosted by Robert Downey Jr, a famous actor commonly known for his role as Iron Man. The eight-part series highlights “innovative and leading technologies that will change the world forever” and provides an informative overview of technologies that have shaped the world of AI. The storytellers document the fascinating creations that have impacted human life, revealing the future of AI and the possibilities of robots replacing humans.

3. AlphaGo

Directed by Greg Kohs, AlphaGo documents the clash between Artificial Intelligence and the abstract strategy board game known as Go. AlphaGo chronicles one of the biggest breakthroughs of AI, the challenge between “a legendary Go master” and an “unproven AI challenger” for the first time. Testing Google’s DeepMind program with Go champions, the documentary goes on to question the technological innovations and what AI can do for humanity.

4. The Human Robot

Created in 2015, The Human Robot focuses on the Japanese culture and their positive outlook on technology in contrast to the popular Western culture fearing the idea of what intellectual machines are capable of. The documentary interviews sociologists, roboticists, ethicists, and philosophers to look at robot designs and the question of “how human is too human?” The Human Robot provides footage explaining the journey of technology in Japan such as the automatons of Tokyo's Robot Restaurant and other ways Japan has implemented technology into their daily lives.

5. Singularity Or Bust

Singularity Or Bust is an award-winning documentary, highlighting a true story that occurred in 2009. The film is different from the traditional approach as it provides a more realistic perspective on the situations of those at the forefront of technology and what they have to go through. The film focuses on two AI scientists and their different views on Technological Singularity and how humans will overcome the dramatic changes tech can create on society. The world of technology has evolved greatly since this time, but the film still touches on the development of AI and its ramifications.
