In our last article, we have compiled a list of opportunities specifically for this summer. In this article, we will talk more in general about how to land an internship through the various platforms available and cold-emailing. Although it is commonly believed that cold-emailing isn't effective, by utilizing these tips down below, you will have a much greater chance of finding a research opportunity or an internship.
1. Do Your RESEARCH
No pun intended, but the research here means that you need to make sure you have a clear understanding on what the professor/company you are emailing does. DO NOT use a generic template and bcc everyone. Personalize each email and make sure you demonstrate interest.
2. Create an Interesting Email Subject Line
While your email is very likely to be submerged in thousands of emails that the other end receives everyday, you do have a chance to stand out by creating an eye-catching subject line. What considers eye-catching? Well, questions over narrations, and don't just say "high school student looking for an internship". Be creative. Be bold.
3. Showcase Yourself
In the email, you should briefly introduce yourself and your past experience, especially those that you think the lab/company would be interested in. You should also attach your resume. Even if you don't have related experience in the industry, show them that your ability to learn and your other qualities.
4. Stay Professional
Although you should talk about your previous experiences, make it concise and format it so that it's not hard to follow. Avoid grammatical errors and incomplete sentences as well. Show that you are a professional who is ready to take on this opportunity.
5. Respond and Follow Up
If the professor or the company responds, congrats! You are on your way to accomplish great things! Make sure you respond ASAP to confirm the position, or schedule a time for the interview. If they haven't responded within a week, don't give up and send them a follow-up email. This email should only be a couple of sentences reminding them about your previous email. Again, don't get upset when you don't get a response. Keep trying until you do.
